Is it the injectors? Duramax symptoms by generation

Duramax injectors fail in a few well-documented ways, and they do not all fail the same. Before you buy, match what the truck is doing to the list below. If it is not clearly injectors, the CP3 pump (LB7 through LMM) or the CP4 (LML) is the other usual suspect, and testing settles it.

  • LB7 (2001–2004): the classic failure. White haze or smoke at idle, especially cold, long cranking, rising oil level or oil that smells like diesel, and balance rates outside GM’s spec. The LB7 injector sits under the valve cover, so labor is the expensive part, which is why most LB7 owners replace all eight at once. Our guide to reading Duramax balance rates shows you how to find the bad cylinder before you pull anything.
  • LLY (2004.5–2005) and LBZ (2006–2007): rough idle, a miss under light load, gray smoke, and one or two cylinders with balance rates well outside the rest. These injectors are external, so replacing one is reasonable if the rest test clean.
  • LMM (2007.5–2010): same external design as the LBZ. Hard starts, hazing and balance-rate spread, sometimes blamed on the emissions system first. Test before condemning either.
  • LML (2011–2016): a failed LML injector usually shows as a misfire or rail-pressure complaint. On this engine rule out the CP4 pump first: a CP4 that has come apart sends debris through every injector, and replacing injectors alone puts new parts into a contaminated system. See our CP4 failure guide.

Prices are live from our store and include free UPS Ground shipping in the lower 48. Every injector ships with a Bosch Authorized label and QR code: scan it in Bosch’s free Quality Scan app and it shows the build date, injector number and serial for the exact unit in your hand. That label is how you know it is a Bosch Authorized reman and not a cleaned-and-painted core.

Replace one injector or all eight?

Honest answer: it depends on the engine and what the rest of the set looks like. On an LB7, the injectors live under the valve covers and the labor is the bulk of the job, so if one has failed at 150,000 miles the other seven are the same age and most owners do the set once. On the external-injector engines (LLY, LBZ, LMM) a single is a reasonable repair when the other seven test within spec. If you do not know, that is exactly what bench testing is for: ship us the set, we test each one, and you buy or rebuild only what is actually out of spec.

Duramax injector questions we get every week

Are these new or remanufactured?

Remanufactured, and specifically Bosch Authorized reman: torn down, wear components replaced with genuine Bosch parts, reassembled and flow-tested to the original specification. New Bosch injectors for these engines are largely no longer produced; an authorized reman is the OE-quality path.

How do I know which generation I have?

The eighth digit of the VIN: 1 = LB7, 2 = LLY, D = LBZ, 6 = LMM, 8 = LML. 2006 trucks can be either LLY or LBZ and 2007 either LBZ or LMM, so check the VIN rather than the model year.

Do I need to reprogram anything?

LB7 through LMM injectors do not require coding to the ECM. LML injectors carry an IQA/trim code that needs to be entered with a scan tool after installation; the code is printed on each injector.

Can you test my injectors instead of selling me a set?

Yes, and on an expensive set it is often the smarter first step. Pull them, ship them to us with a note, and each one goes on the common-rail bench. You get the numbers and a firm quote to rebuild only the ones that failed. Details on the injector testing and rebuild service.

What about the CP3 or CP4 pump?

Low rail pressure, long cranking with no smoke, or power loss under load with clean injectors points at the pump. LB7–LMM run a Bosch CP3; the LML runs a CP4. We stock reman units for both.
