Which Cummins injectors do I need?

Cummins injectors change with engine family, model year and, on Ram trucks, whether it is a pickup or a cab & chassis. Those last two use different injectors in the same years and it is the most common mix-up we see.

Test first: you often only need two

A set of six runs $1,782 to $5,682. We bench-test injectors and hand you the actual flow and return numbers for each one, so you rebuild or replace what has failed and keep what has not. On a high-value set that single decision is usually worth more than the price difference between suppliers.

Symptoms that point at injectors

• Hard starting, worse when hot. Injectors leaking down between starts.
• Rough idle or a miss that clears under load. Usually one injector, not six.
• White smoke at idle that burns off with temperature.
• Fuel diluting the engine oil. Check the level and smell it: an internally leaking injector puts diesel past the rings.
• Knock or rattle on one cylinder under load.

What kills them

Water and particulate. The clearances inside a common-rail injector are measured in microns, and contaminated fuel erodes the nozzle and control valve until flow drifts out of spec. A neglected filter or a weak lift pump accelerates it. Fix the fuel supply before you fit new injectors, or you will be doing this again.

Common questions

Pickup or cab & chassis: how do I tell? Cab & chassis trucks leave the factory without a bed, for service bodies and flatbeds. Same year, different injector. If you are unsure, give us the VIN.

Do I need to replace all six? High-mileage truck with original injectors: usually yes, they wear together. Low-mile truck with one failure: test first.

Do you do industrial and ag Cummins? Yes. QSB, ISC, ISB and ISX are regular work here, along with generator sets and Case IH and New Holland equipment.
