From Petaluma this is a box, not a road trip. Ship the pump, or have your mechanic ship it, and it comes back calibrated. How mail-in works.

Petaluma has milked cows for a century and a half, and the milk still moves: Sonoma and Marin counties run somewhere around ninety cow dairies between them, alongside the vineyards of the Petaluma Gap, Carneros and the Sonoma Valley. All of it is diesel work. Feed gets mixed by tractor at 4:30 AM, effluent gets pumped, generators carry the milking barn through outages, and none of that equipment cares that the nearest injection calibration bench is not in the North Bay.

Because it is not. When an injection pump or a set of injectors actually needs to be opened up, rebuilt and proven on a test stand, North Bay equipment has been going to national mail-order rebuilders, or to whoever the dealer quietly ships it to. Valley Fuel Injection & Turbo is the closer answer: a Northern California shop in Woodland that has done this exact work since 1993, close enough to talk to on the phone and visit when a job warrants it.

We will be straight about the geography, because it drives the advice on this page: Petaluma to Woodland is 76 miles, about an hour and 45 minutes with empty roads, and the roads are not empty. That is why the first recommendation for Sonoma and Marin is not to drive.

Ship the Pump, Not the Truck

Injection work travels well. The component comes off the engine either way, and a rebuilt pump does not know whether it rode home in a pickup bed or a UPS box. From the North Bay it works like this:

  1. Call first: 530-668-0818. Read us the numbers off the pump tag or injector body. We confirm it is a unit we rebuild, what it usually needs, and how the bench schedule looks.
  2. Drain it, cap every fitting, bag it. Then box it with real padding, ideally double-boxed. A pump that shipped loose in a big box arrives as a different, worse pump.
  3. Send it to 1243 E Beamer St, Suite C, Woodland, CA 95776. Any carrier. From the North Bay it is a next-day ground zone.
  4. It goes on the stand as received. You get told what it is actually doing and what the rebuild costs before work starts. If it meets spec, you hear that too.
  5. Rebuild, calibrate, document, return ship. Fuel delivery, timing and governor response set against the factory sheet, then back to your door or your installer’s.

The long version, packing advice included, is on the mail-in rebuild service page. The 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty on reman work applies the same whether the unit arrived by hand or by carrier, with 30 days on electrical and electronic components.

Dairy Iron and Vineyard Tractors

The North Bay’s equipment mix is distinctive, and we see all of it:

  • Dairy tractors and loaders. Feed mixing and scraping rack up engine hours fast at low speed, which is exactly the duty cycle that wears pumps and injectors while the paint still looks fine.
  • The older fleet. Dairies keep tractors for decades. Massey Ferguson, Ford and Case IH units running CAV/Lucas DPA pumps come through constantly; a DPA rebuild typically runs $800–$1,400, and for many of these pumps a rebuild is the only fresh unit money can buy.
  • Manure, irrigation and generator engines. Stationary diesels that must start after sitting, the classic source of varnished pumps and lazy injectors.
  • Vineyard compacts. Petaluma Gap and Sonoma Valley rows are worked by the same small Kubota and Yanmar machines we sell factory parts for as an authorized Kubota and Yanmar dealer.
  • Ranch pickups. Common rail Cummins, Duramax and Power Stroke trucks; reman common rail injectors run $300–$550 each, tested at actual rail pressure before and after.

West Marin’s ranches sit furthest from everything, which only strengthens the case for the box. The tractor injection pump rebuild page walks through the ag side in detail.

For North Bay Shops, Dealers and Mobile Techs

Here is the quiet structure of this trade: plenty of people in Sonoma and Marin can pull and reinstall a pump. Almost nobody anywhere owns the calibration stand, the fixtures and the spec library to rebuild one, because that equipment only pays for itself as a specialty. The one injection shop in the North Bay, down in Santa Rosa, positions itself for light-duty trucks and passenger cars, which leaves ag, industrial and heavy equipment bench work without a local home.

So use us as your bench. Equipment dealers, dairy service outfits, general diesel shops and mobile mechanics send us the pump, the injector set or the turbo; we do the test-and-rebuild half at wholesale and ship it back; you install it and keep your customer. Nobody has to buy a test stand, and the farm gets factory-spec work through the mechanic they already trust. Contact us to set up a shop account.

When Driving In Does Make Sense

Some jobs earn the miles: a machine that is down hard during frost or harvest, a pump plus injectors plus turbo off one engine, a fleet batch, or an intermittent problem where twenty minutes at the counter with the person running the bench saves three phone calls. Free-flow times from the North Bay:

FromMilesClear-road timeHonest call
Novato74About 1 hr 35 minDrive for big jobs, ship the rest
Petaluma76About 1 hr 45 minShip it
Santa Rosa92About 2 hrsShip it

Those times assume Highway 37 and I-80 are behaving, which is a bet you know better than we do. If you do come, we open at 7:00 AM and the address wraps this page. Sonoma and the Carneros side sit a little closer than Petaluma and can treat it as a long errand.

North Bay Shipping Questions

How do I pack an injection pump so it arrives alive?

Drain the fuel, cap or plug every open fitting, seal the pump in a bag, then immobilize it in the box with dense foam or wadded padding, with two inches of cushion on every side. Double-box anything heavy. Toss in a note with your name, number and what the engine was doing, and photograph the tag before it ships.

Does mail-in work cost more than walking it in?

No. The bench work is priced the same either way; you pay the freight in each direction. Against four hours of round-trip windshield time from Petaluma, the carrier usually wins.

My mechanic wants to keep the job. Can they?

That is exactly how we prefer it. They pull it, ship it and reinstall it; we rebuild and calibrate; the warranty rides with the unit. Shops get wholesale pricing on an account.

What about a dead pump nobody will rebuild?

Call before you scrap it. Between the bench, the parts room and the exchange program, orphaned ag pumps get saved here weekly, and if yours truly is not rebuildable we will say so and talk options.
