This is the Alliant Power D4W7018, a new 7000 Series fuel injector nozzle for the Caterpillar 3406B mechanical engine. It is a new pencil nozzle, not a rebuild. It takes the place of Cat 4W7018, which replaced the older Cat 4W7012. Cat’s own remanufactured numbers for this nozzle are 0R3422 and 0R1745. Catalogs also list Cat 4W7018 for the 3406C and for the 3408 engine in the 988B wheel loader and the D8L track-type tractor. It is sold each: a 3406 takes six and a 3408 takes eight.

Hard starting, a miss at idle, black or white smoke, fuel in the oil and high fuel use all point at worn nozzles on these mechanical engines. Nozzles wear as a set, so most shops change every cylinder at the same time and check the injection pump and lines while they are in there. This is a mechanical nozzle with no electrical connector, so there is nothing to code.

Clean the nozzle bore and seat before fitting, renew the seals, keep the fuel line connections clean while they are open and torque the nozzle and line nuts to the Caterpillar figures for your engine. Bleed the fuel system before starting.
