It is BorgWarner’s replacement for Garrett 466998-0001, 466998-0002 and 466998-0009, and it replaces Detroit 23508405, 23508406, 23515894, 23518695, 23521167 and 23528029 and Navistar 2585835C91. The catalog description covers 300 to 350 hp engines, and two catalogs list the Garrett turbo it replaces on the 350 hp 11.1L. Older catalogs show the same turbo as Schwitzer 169012.
Not every 11.1L takes this turbo. Engines built with the Garrett TV5101 (Garrett 466838 or 466245, Detroit 23503732 or 23507908) take BorgWarner 167736 instead, and the 12.7L takes other turbos again. Heavy truck turbos are matched by the number on the turbo tag, so read the tag on your old unit before you order. Oil in the charge pipes, shaft play, a noisy turbo or low boost are the usual reasons for replacement.
