This is the Garrett 848212-9001S, a turbocharger remanufactured by Garrett for the 2004.5 to 2010 Chevrolet and GMC 6.6L Duramax: the LLY, the LBZ and the LMM. It is the stock replacement GT3788VA variable vane turbo and it comes with the VGT actuator (the vane control solenoid) and the vane position sensor fitted. It fits Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500 trucks and 2006 to 2010 Express and Savana vans with the 6.6L Duramax. It replaces GM 12639460, 98011735 and 97387896 and the earlier Garrett 736554, 759622 and 790032 series turbos. A refundable core applies. The new Garrett version of the same turbo is 848212-5001S.
Sticking vanes, a vane position code, low boost, slow spool, oil in the intake or shaft play are the usual reasons these come off. Find out why the old one failed before the new one goes on: check the oil feed and drain, the air filter and the intake tract. The 2004.5 to 2005 LLY also needs the Garrett vane position sensor adapter harness, 771864-0001, which is a separate part. Gaskets are not in the box, so order the install kit with the turbo.

One turbo covers the LLY, LBZ and LMM, but the 2004.5 to 2005 LLY needs adapter harness 771864-0001. On a 2006 LLY or a van, send us the VIN so we can check the sensor plug. On a 2004.5 to 2005 LLY, fit the Garrett vane position sensor adapter harness 771864-0001 between the truck harness and the new sensor. Gaskets are not in the box: catalogs list the Alliant Power AP0162 turbo install kit for these trucks, and we can confirm the kit for an LBZ. Use a clean oil feed line and prime the turbo with clean engine oil before the first start.
