Replace the dynamo when the battery will not stay charged, the charge lamp stays on with the engine running, or the bearing is rough or noisy. The regulator is a separate part, so test it and check the plug and wiring first. A failed regulator gives the same no-charge complaint as a failed dynamo.

Disconnect the battery before you start. Check the drive belt for wear, set the belt tension and check pulley alignment. Make sure the dynamo plug, the regulator plug and the ground path are clean and tight. If the battery still does not charge with a good dynamo, test the regulator.
