Replace a starter when it clicks but will not turn the engine, cranks slowly on a good battery, grinds on engagement or keeps running after the engine fires. Rule out the battery, cables, grounds and the start signal first. Kubota fitted more than one starter to the 03 Series: its workshop manuals list a 1.4 kW starter for the D1803-CR and a 2.0 kW starter for the V2403-M and V2403-CR, so the engine model alone does not pick the part.

Disconnect the battery before removal. Count the pinion teeth on the old starter before you fit the new one: this starter has 9, and some 03 Series starters have 11. Clean the mounting face and the ground path, check the flywheel ring gear for worn or chipped teeth, and tighten the mounting bolts to Kubota’s torque spec. This is a 12 V starter, so do not fit it to a 24 V machine.
