The Stanadyne 38416 is a new, genuine Stanadyne pencil injector with a rate-shaping nozzle (RSN). It fits John Deere PowerTech 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines: the turbocharged 4045T and 6068T and the turbocharged, air-to-air aftercooled 4045H and 6068H, including engines with the Stanadyne DE10 electronic pump. John Deere sells it as RE531436, which replaced RE507766. It carries a blue color code. You need four for a 4045 and six for a 6068.
How it differs from the Stanadyne 29279 (John Deere RE48786, pink): the 29279 is John Deere’s conventional pencil nozzle for these turbo engines, and the 38416 is a rate-shaping nozzle. John Deere uses rate-shaping nozzles on Tier 2 certified 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines to meet emission rules, and sets them to a lower opening pressure than the RE48786. John Deere lists both on some of the same engine models, so match the number on your old injectors and never mix the two types in one engine. Pencil injectors are replaced for hard starting, smoke, rough running, misfire or leaks past the carbon stop seal.
Confirm Fitment Before You Order
Stanadyne 29279 (RE48786, pink) is the conventional nozzle for the same engine models, 35050 (RE507287) is also blue, and 35102, 36710, 36713 and 38645 fit other 4045 and 6068 builds. Send us the number stamped on your old injectors, or the engine model code and serial number from the engine tag (the code looks like 4045TF275). Call 530-668-0818 and we will confirm the exact match at no charge before anything ships.

Every time a pencil nozzle comes out, fit a new carbon stop seal and a new seal washer (John Deere uses the JD258 seal installer), clean the bore and seat, and replace brittle leak-off grommets. John Deere torques the hold-down clamp cap screw to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and the leak-off line nuts to only 5 Nm (44 lb-in) on these engines. John Deere’s opening pressure setting for a new rate-shaping nozzle (Tier 2 certified engines) is 244 to 249 bar (3,540 to 3,620 psi), with no more than 7 bar (100 psi) between cylinders. A rate-shaping nozzle may not chatter on a pop tester; John Deere passes it if opening pressure, seat leakage and return fuel are in spec.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Stanadyne 38416 and 29279?
The 29279 (John Deere RE48786, pink) is the conventional pencil nozzle for these turbo engines. The 38416 (blue) is a rate-shaping nozzle, used on Tier 2 certified 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines and set to a lower opening pressure. Never mix the two types in one engine.
What John Deere number is Stanadyne 38416, and how many does an engine take?
