Which VE pump do I need?
The Bosch VE is a mechanical rotary distributor pump — no electronics, no computer. It is what ran the 1989–1993 12-valve Cummins and a long list of Case, New Holland, IVECO and Kobelco industrial engines. Four configurations here, all remanufactured in house.
| Engine / application | Bosch number | Price |

| Cummins 4BT 3.9L / Case / Kobelco (VE4) | 0460424081RX | $1,850 |

The number stamped on your pump tag is what identifies it definitively. Send a photo or call (530) 668-0818 and a tech will read it with you.
Why people still want a VE
Because it is mechanical. No lift pump sensor, no ECM, no failure mode that puts a truck on a flatbed because of an electronic fault. On the 12-valve Cummins the VE is one of the reasons those engines are still running thirty-five years later. Rebuilt properly and set on a calibration bench, a VE will outlast most of what is bolted around it.
What fails on them
- Governor and internal wear. Fuel is the lubricant. Miles and contaminated fuel wear the rotor, plungers and governor weights until delivery drifts.
- Fuel shut-off solenoid. Truck cranks and will not start. Cheap part, commonly misdiagnosed as a dead pump.
- Diaphragm and seal failure on the top cover, which shows up as diesel weeping down the side of the pump.
- Timing drift. Slow to start, smoky, down on power. Often correctable without a full rebuild.
- Water damage. Rust inside a rotary pump ends it. This is what a neglected water separator eventually costs.
Rebuild yours, or exchange
Two paths, same as our other pump families. Send us your pump and we disassemble, inspect, rebuild to Bosch specification and calibrate it on our own bench to the delivery and timing numbers for your engine — you get your own pump back. Or buy a remanufactured unit when we have your configuration on the shelf and send yours back as the core.
Either way we quote you a firm number after inspection, before any work starts. See the mail-in rebuild service for how to pack and ship one, or the exchange program for core terms.
Bench testing
Every pump is run on a calibration bench and set to the specification for the engine it is going on — not a generic profile. Valley Fuel Injection has been a Bosch factory-authorized diesel service center since 1993, and the benches and specification data are the reason that authorization exists. A VE can be assembled perfectly and still deliver the wrong fuel at the wrong moment if it is never calibrated.
Warranty and shipping
Remanufactured injection pumps carry 12 months, unlimited mileage against defects in materials and workmanship — full terms. We ship nationwide from Woodland, California; orders process in 1–2 business days. Shipping policy.
Common questions
Can you tell whether it needs a rebuild before I ship it? Often, from symptoms. Hard starting, smoke colour, whether it dies under load, whether it leaks — that narrows it a long way over the phone.
How long does a VE rebuild take? Depends on condition and parts. We quote turnaround with the price, after inspection.
Do you rebuild VP30 and VP44 as well? Yes — see VP30 and VP44. Our guide to VE and VP30 rebuilds covers what fails and why.
Agricultural and industrial engines? Most of what comes through this shop. Case, New Holland, IVECO, Kobelco, generator sets and tractors are routine here.
