The Alliant Power D38416 is a new pencil fuel injector with a rate-shaping nozzle (RSN), not a rebuild. It is Alliant Power’s own version of the Stanadyne 38416, which John Deere fits to turbocharged PowerTech 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines: the 4045T and 6068T, and the air-to-air aftercooled 4045H and 6068H. John Deere sells that nozzle as RE531436, which replaced RE507766, and the original carries a blue color code. You need four for a 4045 and six for a 6068.

This is the rate-shaping injector of the family. John Deere uses rate-shaping nozzles on Tier 2 certified 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines to meet emission rules and sets them to a lower opening pressure than the conventional turbo nozzle, the D29279 (Stanadyne 29279, John Deere RE48786, pink). Naturally aspirated 4045D and 6068D engines take the D32262 (red). John Deere lists both turbo nozzles on some of the same engine models, so match what came out and never mix types in one engine. Every time a pencil nozzle comes out, fit a new carbon stop seal and seal washer, clean the nozzle bore and make sure the seat in the head is clean and smooth. John Deere torques the hold-down clamp cap screw to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and the leak-off line nuts to only 5 Nm (44 lb-in) on the 4.5 L and 6.8 L engines; leak-off lines break if overtightened. John Deere’s opening pressure setting for a new rate-shaping nozzle (Tier 2 certified engines) is 244 to 249 bar (3,540 to 3,620 psi), with no more than 7 bar (100 psi) between cylinders. A rate-shaping nozzle may not chatter on a pop tester; John Deere passes it if opening pressure, seat leakage and return fuel are in spec.

Can I use the D38416 in place of the D29279?

No. They fit the same engine families but they are different nozzles. D38416 is the rate-shaping nozzle (John Deere RE531436, blue) and D29279 is the conventional one (RE48786, pink), set to a different opening pressure. Fit the type your engine was built with.

What numbers does the D38416 replace?
