Kubota GL7000 Lowboy II Diesel Generator (7 kW)

The GL7000 is the smallest of the three 60 Hz GL Series generators Kubota sells in the US: a 7 kW standby, 6.5 kW prime, single-phase diesel set built around the Kubota Z482 two-cylinder, water-cooled diesel running at 3600 rpm. Engine and generator are direct coupled, and the whole unit sits about 27.5 inches tall.

It is a job-site and farm generator first: tools, pumps, small compressors, lights and trailers. The GL7000-TM terminal model has output terminals for direct wiring to a transfer switch, so it can also sit in one place as backup power. We supply it new as an authorized Kubota dealer and quote each unit by phone.

Models

  • GL7000-USA (receptacle model): One 5-20R GFCI receptacle, one L5-30R, one L6-30R and one L14-30R, with a voltage selector switch on the panel.
  • GL7000-TM (terminal model): One GFCI receptacle plus output terminals for direct wiring. Kubota lists this model as ATS compatible. Use it for a hard-wired or transfer-switch installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the GL7000-USA and the GL7000-TM?

The GL7000-USA is the receptacle model: you plug loads into the panel outlets. The GL7000-TM is the terminal model, with one GFCI outlet and output terminals for direct wiring.

Can a GL7000 back up a building?

Yes, through a transfer switch. Kubota lists the GL7000-TM terminal model as ATS compatible, so that is the model for a wired-in setup, at up to 27.1 A at 240 V. A licensed electrician must install the transfer (isolation) switch and decide how the generator is connected and started.

How long does a GL7000 run on one tank?

Kubota’s spec sheet lists 10.0 hours at full load, 13.3 hours at three-quarter load, 16.5 hours at half load and 20.0 hours at quarter load on the 7.4 gallon tank. Fuel use at full load is 0.69 gallons an hour.

GL7000 or GL11000?

The GL11000 gives 10 kW prime against 6.5 kW, and 41.7 A at 240 V against 27.1 A. It is 50.4 inches long against 42, and Kubota’s model pages list 650 lb against 518 lb. Both are 27.5 inches tall and use the same 7.4 gallon tank. The GL7000 runs longer on that tank: 10.0 hours at full load against 7.0.

What does a GL7000 take for routine service?

Kubota sells one maintenance kit for the GL7000 and GL11000, KEAGM-71100: oil filter, inner and outer air filters, fuel filter and one gallon of oil. We list that kit. Kubota’s spec sheet lists 2.2 L of engine oil and 3.7 L of coolant for the GL7000. Follow the service intervals in the Kubota operator’s manual for your unit.

How do I get a quote on a GL7000?

Call 530-668-0818 and tell us which model you need, GL7000-USA or GL7000-TM.

Before You Run It

  • Run it outdoors only, in a well-ventilated spot. Never run a generator inside a home, shop or enclosed trailer.
  • Do not use it in the rain or where it is exposed to rain. Kubota’s operator’s manual lists this as an electric shock hazard.
  • Before it is connected to a building’s wiring, a licensed electrician must install a transfer (isolation) switch. Backfeeding a building can electrocute line workers and damage the generator.
  • Use ultra low sulfur diesel only (No. 2-D S15). Kubota’s manual covers No. 1-D S15 for cold weather.
  • Kubota says not to plug sensitive electronics straight into a generator. Ask your electrician about a safe way to connect them.
  • California: it is a violation of Public Resources Code Section 4442 or 4443 to use or operate this engine on any forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the engine is equipped with a spark arrester, as defined in Section 4442, maintained in effective working order, or the engine is constructed, equipped, and maintained for the prevention of fire pursuant to Section 4443. Kubota’s operator’s manual says the engine is not fitted with a spark arrester as standard.

Warning symbolWARNING: Breathing diesel engine exhaust exposes you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

  • Always start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area.
  • If in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
  • Do not modify or tamper with the exhaust system.
  • Do not idle the engine except as necessary.
