Kubota V2203 Complete Diesel Engine | New Genuine Kubota

The Kubota V2203 is the 2.2 litre member of Kubota’s 03 Series: a vertical, water-cooled, 4-cycle, four-cylinder diesel with a bore and stroke of 87.0 x 92.4 mm and 2,197 cc (134.1 cu in) of displacement, rated at roughly 48 HP. The machine and engine makers’ own catalogs list it in Bobcat loaders, excavators and the Toolcat 5600, Kubota L-series tractors, KX121-3 and U45 excavators and R520 wheel loaders, and Multiquip WhisperWatt generators. Carrier Transicold’s CT4-134-DI reefer engines also carry the V2203 name, but they are separate builds made exclusively for Carrier. Which V2203 Does Your Machine Actually Take?

This matters more on the V2203 than on almost any other Kubota engine. Three engine families share the name, and they do not share pistons or injectors:

• V2203 indirect injection (IDI) | for example V2203-M-E2B, V2203-M-E3B and the generator V2203-M-E3-BG. Kubota E-TVCS spherical prechamber combustion, 87.0 x 92.4 mm, 2,197 cc. Documented in Kubota’s KX121-3 and U45-3 excavators (V2203-M-E2BH) and Multiquip DCA-15SPX4 and DCA-15SPXU4 generators (V2203-M).
• V2203 direct injection (DI) | model code V2203-M-DI-E2B. Same 87.0 x 92.4 mm bore and stroke, but direct injection with no prechambers and different nozzles. Bobcat lists it for the 334 and 335 excavators, and Kubota’s parts catalog lists a V2203-DI in the L4350 tractor.
• V2203L-DI | the long-stroke Carrier Transicold engine, 83.0 x 102.4 mm and 2,216 cc. Different bore, different stroke, different parts. Carrier calls it the CT4-134-DI, a name Carrier also used on its earlier V2203-DI-E2B engines, which take different pistons.

Kubota stamps the serial number on the block, and on the 03 Series it sits on the injection pump mounting surface. The sticker on top of the valve cover lists the engine model, serial and engine part number while it is still readable, but Kubota says not to identify the engine from the EPA emissions label, and its manual notes the E3B emissions suffix is not marked on the engine. That is why we ask for the serial before quoting: the name “V2203” alone cannot tell us which engine is in your machine.

New Engine Availability: What We Can Actually Ship

Straight answer, because this engine has real constraints and we would rather tell you up front than take an order we cannot fill correctly:

• Kubota runs no remanufactured whole-engine program. Kubota reman covers components only, including injection pumps and injectors. New complete engines go through Kubota’s replacement engine program.
• Emissions certification governs repowers. The variable-speed version of this engine has not been certified for the US market in some years, and replacement-engine allowances carry conditions on machine age and configuration. Availability is real but configuration-specific.
• Some engines ship without accessories. Bobcat’s listing for its 6685981 V2203 engine, for example, says it ships without the starter, alternator, flywheel and flywheel housing, so budget for transferring yours.

Application & Fitment

Everything below comes from the machine and engine makers’ own parts catalogs and manuals. It is not a complete list, and several of these machines were built with more than one engine, so the serial number decides.

Bobcat loaders and excavators, per Bobcat’s own engine part listings: 331, 334, 335, 341, 753, 763, 773, 7753, S130, S150, S160, S175, S185, T140, S450, S510, S530 and Toolcat 5600. Important: several of these, including the S160, S185, 773, 341 and Toolcat 5600, are also listed under turbocharged V2003 engine part numbers, and Bobcat says parts vary by serial number. The model name by itself cannot select the engine on a Bobcat.

Kubota machines: Kubota’s parts catalog lists V2203-family engines in the L4200, L4240, L4300, L4310, L4330, L4350, L4400, L4610 and L4630 tractors, the R520 and R520S wheel loaders, and the KX121-3 and U45 excavators. Engine codes vary by model (for example V2203-M-E2A in the L4400 and V2203-M-ERP in the R520S), and the L4350 is listed with the direct injection V2203-DI. Kubota’s excavator workshop manual gives the KX121-3S/D and U45-3S/D the V2203-M-E2BH, and shows the KX161-3S sold in the US, Canada and Australia was upgraded to a V2403-M.

Generator sets: Multiquip’s manuals list a Kubota V2203 in the DCA-15SPX3 and a V2203-M in the DCA-15SPX4 and DCA-15SPXU4 WhisperWatt generators. The newer DCA15SPXU4F is a Tier 4 Final unit with a Kubota D1503, not a V2203.

Carrier Transicold refrigeration units, where the engine is Carrier’s CT4-134-DI. Carrier’s parts lists state these engines are made exclusively for Carrier Transicold by Kubota. By Carrier’s own model charts, the long-stroke V2203L-DI-E3B-CTD is used in the Ultra XT, XTC and XL, Extra XT, Ultima XTC, X2 1800, 2100 and 2500 series, Vector 6500 and 6600MT, and the RG and UG gensets. The earlier V2203-DI-E2B-CTD was used in the Genesis TM900 and TM1000, Extra XT, Ultra XT, Ultra XTC, Ultra XL, Multi-Temp, Smart Air, Ultima 53 and Ultima XTC, plus a genset version. Several units appear on both lists, so a reefer engine has to be matched by its engine serial number and Carrier’s parts list, not the unit name. The long-stroke V2203L-DI does not share pistons or cylinder specs with the 87 mm V2203, so tell us it is a Carrier engine when you call.

Those are the industrial figures. Carrier’s long-stroke V2203L-DI is a different 2,216 cc engine rated 31.7 to 36.0 HP at 1,700 to 2,200 rpm depending on the unit, so do not compare a reefer engine’s output against an industrial spec sheet.

Can I still buy a new V2203?

Availability depends on your specific configuration and emissions certification, which is why we check the serial number first. If a new engine is not the right answer for your machine, we will say so and lay out the alternatives.

How do I know which V2203 I have?
You cannot tell from the name “V2203” alone. The IDI, the direct-injection version and the long-stroke Carrier V2203L-DI all carry it, and they do not share pistons or injectors. The serial number, stamped on the injection pump mounting surface on 03 Series engines, is the answer, and the valve-cover sticker, if still readable, lists the full model and engine part number. Call it in and we will decode it.

Does the engine arrive ready to drop in?
Not always. Bobcat’s listing for its 6685981 V2203 engine, for example, says it ships without the starter, alternator, flywheel and flywheel housing, and those transfer from your old engine. We will confirm exactly what is and is not included on the specific engine we quote you.

Should I rebuild mine instead?
Sometimes that is the better call, and we do that work in house. The V2203 block is parent bore with no factory liners, and the cylinder head is the usual condemning part, so the core’s condition decides it. See our V2203 parts, rebuild and injection service page.
