6.7 Cummins Grid Heater Problems: Symptoms & Fixes
08/27/2026The Kubota V2203 is a 2.2 liter (2,197 cc), four-cylinder, water-cooled diesel from Kubota’s 03 Series. It went into Bobcat loaders, excavators and the Toolcat, Kubota L-series tractors, KX121-3 and U45 excavators and R520 wheel loaders, Multiquip WhisperWatt portable generators, and, under Carrier’s own CT4-134-DI name, Carrier Transicold refrigeration units.
It is also an easy engine to order the wrong parts for, because “V2203” covers an indirect injection engine, a direct injection engine and a long-stroke Carrier engine that do not share pistons or injectors. This guide covers how to tell which one you have, the machines the manufacturers’ own catalogs list, what fails, and what to do when the engine is finished.
Before you buy a V2203 part, pin down which engine you have: the indirect injection (IDI) V2203, the direct injection V2203-M-DI, or Carrier’s long-stroke V2203L-DI. The Carrier engine has a smaller bore and a longer stroke, the DI engines use different nozzles, and each emissions version changes parts again. Order from the engine serial number, not the machine model.
We supply new Kubota V2203 engines and can source other Kubota diesel engines for a repower. Send us the engine serial number plus the machine model and serial, and we will confirm the right build before we quote. Call 530-668-0818.
Which Kubota V2203 Do You Have?
Three engine families carry the V2203 name. The figures below come from Kubota’s and Carrier’s own spec sheets and workshop manuals.
| Variant | Combustion | Bore x Stroke | Documented Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDI V2203 and V2203-M (for example V2203-M-E2B, V2203-M-E3B, V2203-M-E3-BG) | Indirect injection, Kubota E-TVCS spherical chamber, glow plug in the chamber | 87.0 x 92.4 mm, 2,197 cc (134.1 cu in) | Kubota KX121-3 and U45-3 excavators (V2203-M-E2BH), Multiquip DCA-15SPX4 and DCA-15SPXU4 generators (V2203-M), generator builds (V2203-M-E3-BG) |
| V2203-M-DI (for example V2203-M-DI-E2B) | Direct injection | 87.0 x 92.4 mm, 2,197 cc (134.1 cu in) | Bobcat 334 and 335 excavators (V2203-M-DI-E2B); Kubota’s parts catalog also lists a V2203-DI in the L4350 tractor |
| V2203L-DI, Carrier CT4-134-DI (Tier 4i builds are V2203L-DI-E3B-CTD) | Direct injection, intake air heater as the starting aid | 83.0 x 102.4 mm, 2,216 cc (135.2 cu in) | Carrier Transicold trailer units and RG and UG gensets |
The Carrier V2203L-DI pairs the 83 mm bore of a Kubota V2003 with the 102.4 mm stroke of a V2403. Its pistons, rings and cylinder specs do not cross to the 87 mm engines. Carrier also used the CT4-134-DI name before this engine: earlier CT4-134-DI engines were built as the V2203-DI-E2B, and Carrier’s parts lists split the two by engine part number and serial range, with different piston part numbers. “CT4-134-DI” alone does not tell you which pistons to order.
The fuel systems differ too. Kubota’s 03-M workshop manual specs the IDI V2203-M with a Bosch-type mini pump and Bosch throttle-type mini nozzles (a pintle design) that open at 1,991 to 2,134 psi. Carrier’s Tier 4i V2203L-DI uses a Bosch K-type mini pump and P-type hole nozzles set to open at 2,809 psi. Nozzles and pump calibrations are not interchangeable between them.
The IDI engine’s fuel system also changed with emissions. Kubota’s E3B workshop manual lists a Denso PFR 4M mini pump and Denso OPD mini nozzles on the interim Tier 4 V2203-M-E3B and the generator V2203-M-E3-BG, with the same 1,991 psi injection pressure and a 22.0:1 compression ratio, so the pump and nozzles change with the emissions version too.
Kubota stamps the serial number on the block, and on 03 Series engines it sits on the injection pump mounting surface. When the sticker on top of the valve cover is still readable, it lists the engine model, serial number and engine part number. Kubota says not to identify the engine from the EPA emissions label, and its manual notes that the E3B emissions suffix is not marked on the engine at all. Our Kubota engine identification guide shows where to look and how to read the serial.

What Machines Use the Kubota V2203?
Everything below comes from the machine and engine makers’ own parts catalogs, spec sheets and manuals, not reseller listings. It is not a complete list, and several of these machines were built with more than one engine, so use it as a starting point and let the serial number decide.
Bobcat
Bobcat’s parts store lists these complete V2203 engines and the models each one fits:
| Bobcat Part No. | Bobcat Description | Models Listed |
|---|---|---|
| 6685981 (new), 6685981REM (reman) | V2203, Tier 2, 40 HP; ships without starter, alternator, flywheel and flywheel housing | 331, 334 and 341 excavators; 753, 763, 773, 7753, S160 and S185 loaders; Toolcat 5600 |
| 7143319 (new), 7143319REM (reman) | V2203, 35.9 kW, EPA Tier 2 / EU Stage II | S130, S150, S160 and S175 loaders; T140 track loader |
| 7022149 | V2203, 48.8 HP, EPA Tier 2 / EU Stage II | S450, S510 and S530 loaders |
| 6689052REM | V2203-M-DI-E2B, remanufactured | 334 and 335 excavators |
Bobcat also lists the S160, S185, 773, 341 and Toolcat 5600 under turbocharged V2003 engines (for example 6685982REM and 6683203, and 6689580 for the Toolcat), and Bobcat’s own listings say parts vary by serial number. On those machines the model name cannot pick the engine. The machine serial number or the engine serial can.
Kubota machines
Kubota’s own parts catalog lists V2203-family engines in the L4200, L4240, L4300, L4310, L4330, L4350, L4400, L4610 and L4630 tractors, the R520 and R520S wheel loaders, and the KX121-3 and U45 excavators. The engine codes vary by model (V2203-A, V2203-EHA, V2203-M-E2A and V2203-M-ERP, among others), and the L4350 is listed with the direct injection V2203-DI. Kubota’s excavator workshop manual gives the KX121-3 and U45-3 the V2203-M-E2BH.
One near miss: the same manual shows Kubota upgraded the KX161-3S sold in the US, Canada and Australia to a V2403-M. That engine is covered in our Kubota V2403 engine guide.
Generators
Multiquip’s manuals list a Kubota V2203 in the DCA-15SPX3 and a V2203-M in the DCA-15SPX4 and DCA-15SPXU4 WhisperWatt generators. The newer DCA15SPXU4F is a Tier 4 Final unit with a Kubota D1503, so the suffix on a generator’s model plate matters.
Carrier Transicold
Carrier’s parts lists state that these engines are made exclusively for Carrier Transicold by Kubota, and Carrier calls them the CT4-134-DI. By Carrier’s own model charts:
- Tier 4i long-stroke V2203L-DI-E3B-CTD: Ultra XT, Ultra XTC, Ultra XL, Extra XT, Ultima XTC, X2 1800, X2 2100, X2 2100A and 2100R, X2 2500A and 2500R, Vector 6500, Vector 6600MT, and the RG and UG gensets.
- Earlier V2203-DI-E2B-CTD: Extra XT, Ultra XT, Ultra XTC, Ultra XL, Multi-Temp, Smart Air, Ultima 53 and Ultima XTC, plus a genset version.
Several unit models appear on both lists, which is why a reefer engine has to be ordered from its engine serial number and Carrier’s parts list, not from the unit name.
Can You Still Buy a New Kubota V2203?
For many machines that were built with one, yes, but there is a catch worth knowing before you shop. Kubota’s engine catalog lists the industrial V2203 at Tier 2 (V2203-M-E2B and V2203-M-DI-E2B) and interim Tier 4 (V2203-M-E3B) levels. Current EPA standards for new machines are stricter, so a new Tier 2 or interim Tier 4 V2203 going into an existing machine has to be supplied as a replacement engine under EPA’s rule at 40 CFR 1068.240.
That rule lets the engine manufacturer build a new engine to an older emissions standard to replace an engine already in service, in equipment no more than 40 years old, and the engine carries a label limiting it to that use. In practice it means we need the machine model and serial and the old engine’s serial before we can quote, and the correct build depends on which V2203 and which emissions version your machine left the factory with.
Your realistic options:
- Fuel system work only. Pump and injectors tested and rebuilt, when compression and the head check out.
- Overhaul with Kubota parts. Pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets matched to your engine spec, if the block still has its oversize step left and the head passes.
- A remanufactured engine, where one is cataloged for your machine. Bobcat, for example, lists reman versions of 6685981 and 7143319 with a refundable core charge.
- A new engine. See our new Kubota V2203 engine, or our Kubota engine sourcing page for other models.
Whichever way you go, check what has to transfer from the old engine. Bobcat’s 6685981 listing, for example, ships without the starter, alternator, flywheel and flywheel housing.
What Fails on a Kubota V2203?
Here is what to check, and the limits to check it against, from Kubota’s 03-M workshop manual: the injection nozzles, the injection pump, no-start causes on the fuel side, the cylinder head and bore wear.
Injection nozzles (check every 1,500 hours)
Kubota calls for a nozzle check every 1,500 hours: spray pattern, opening pressure and seat tightness. On the IDI V2203-M the opening pressure spec is 1,991 to 2,134 psi, set with adjusting washers (about 34 psi per 0.01 mm of washer thickness), and the seat has to hold 1,849 psi for 10 seconds without leaking. Every time a nozzle comes out, Kubota says to replace the copper gasket and heat seal under it. Kubota’s no-start chart lists compression leaking past the nozzle holder or glow plug as one cause.
Injection pump (check every 3,000 hours)
At 3,000 hours Kubota calls for two pump tests with a pressure tester on the pump: the pump element has to build at least 1,991 psi on the starter, and the delivery valve has to hold pressure falling from 1,991 to 1,849 psi for 10 seconds (5 seconds is the allowable limit). If the pump fails either test, Kubota says to replace it or have it repaired by a pump service shop, and not to take it apart in the field.
Fuel in the engine oil belongs on the same list. Kubota’s troubleshooting chart gives a worn injection pump plunger, poor nozzle injection or a broken pump as the causes.
No-start on the fuel side
Kubota’s no-start list starts with the basics: air or water in the fuel, a clogged filter or hose, a loose injection line nut and a stop solenoid that is not working. After those come the injection pump, injection timing and a worn fuel camshaft. A solenoid you can hear click has not proven the pump is delivering. With fuel at the pump inlet, crack a line at an injector while cranking. No fuel pulse at any line points at the solenoid, rack or pump, not the injectors. Purge the air first; our Kubota fuel system bleeding guide covers it.
On the IDI engines the glow plugs sit in the combustion chamber, so a weak plug shows up as long cranking on a cold morning. Carrier’s V2203L-DI lists an intake air heater in the intake manifold as its starting aid, so check that circuit instead.
Cylinder head
Both Kubota’s and Carrier’s manuals include a dye penetrant crack check for the head. On the IDI V2203-M, valve recess past 0.40 mm (0.016 in) calls for a new valve first. If it is still past the limit with the new valve, the manual calls for a new head. The flatness limit is 0.05 mm over 500 mm, and Kubota says to recheck valve recess after resurfacing.
Bore wear
A new V2203 bore measures 87.000 to 87.022 mm, with a wear limit of 87.150 mm. Kubota’s fix is one oversize: bore and hone to 87.250 to 87.272 mm and fit 0.25 mm oversize pistons and rings. When that oversize bore wears past 87.400 mm, the manual says to replace the cylinder block. Before you price an overhaul, find out whether the block has already been bored. Kubota marks its oversize pistons “0.25 OS”.

Should You Rebuild or Replace Your V2203?
Go by measurements, not hours on the meter. Test compression with the engine warm, all nozzles out and a fully charged battery. Kubota’s 03-M spec is 512 to 583 psi cranking at 290 rpm, with 370 psi as the allowable limit and less than 10 percent variation between cylinders. Carrier’s V2203L-DI manual uses the same 10 percent rule.
After that it comes down to two parts. The head: cracks, or valve recess still past limit with new valves, condemns it. The block: if it has already used its one oversize, a worn bore means a new block. A sound block and head with a tired fuel system is a fuel system job. A block on its oversize with a cracked head usually points to a replacement engine.
If the problem is only fuel delivery, the math changes. Testing a set of injectors and rebuilding the pump costs a fraction of an engine, and it is work we do in house on our own test benches. We also take mail-in pumps and injectors from anywhere in the country if your machine is not near Northern California.
Injector bench testing typically runs $50 to $100 per injector, a compression test typically $300 to $500, and specialty diesel shop labor in California $155 to $200 per hour. Pulling and reinstalling an injection pump on farm or construction equipment typically runs $400 to $1,200 in labor. Pump rebuilds, overhaul parts and complete engines are quoted from your engine serial number, because the correct parts differ by variant and emissions version. Frequently Asked Questions
How much horsepower does a Kubota V2203 have?
Kubota rates the V2203-M-E2B at 48.8 HP (36.4 kW) SAE gross intermittent at 2,800 rpm and the interim Tier 4 V2203-M-E3B at 48.1 HP. Machine ratings run lower: Kubota lists the KX121-3S at 42 HP gross at 2,250 rpm, and Bobcat lists its 6685981 engine at 40 HP. Carrier’s long-stroke V2203L-DI is rated 31.7 to 36.0 HP at 1,700 to 2,200 rpm, so do not compare a reefer engine with an industrial spec sheet.
Is the Kubota V2203 the same as a V2003 or a V2403?
No. All three are 03 Series engines, but the V2003 is 83.0 x 92.4 mm and 1,999 cc (122.0 cu in), the V2203 is 87.0 x 92.4 mm and 2,197 cc (134.1 cu in), and the V2403 is 87.0 x 102.4 mm and 2,434 cc (148.5 cu in). Bobcat lists several machines, including the S160, S185 and Toolcat 5600, under both a V2203 and a turbocharged V2003, and says parts vary by serial number.
Which Carrier Transicold units use the Kubota V2203?
Carrier calls it the CT4-134-DI. Carrier’s Tier 4i parts list shows the long-stroke V2203L-DI in the Ultra XT, XTC and XL, Extra XT, Ultima XTC, X2 1800, 2100 and 2500 series, Vector 6500 and 6600MT, and the RG and UG gensets. Earlier CT4-134-DI engines were the V2203-DI-E2B, used in units including the Extra XT, Ultra XT and XTC, Multi-Temp, Smart Air and Ultima 53. Order by engine serial number.
Can a worn V2203 block be bored oversize?
Once. Kubota’s 03-M workshop manual calls for boring and honing to 0.25 mm oversize (87.250 to 87.272 mm on the V2203) with oversize pistons and rings. When the oversize bore wears past its 87.400 mm limit, the manual says to replace the cylinder block. Carrier’s V2203L-DI manual uses the same 0.25 mm oversize on its 83 mm bore.
How do I know if my V2203 needs an overhaul?
Test it instead of going by hours. Kubota’s spec is 512 to 583 psi cranking compression at 290 rpm, with a 370 psi allowable limit and less than 10 percent variation between cylinders. Low compression, heavy oil use and blow-by point to an overhaul. Hard starting, smoke and fuel in the oil often point to the injectors or the injection pump first.
Where is the serial number on a Kubota V2203?
On the V2203 and other 03 Series engines, Kubota stamps the serial number on the injection pump mounting surface. The sticker on top of the valve cover also lists the model, serial and engine part number when it is still readable. Do not identify the engine from the EPA emissions label.
Getting the Right V2203 Parts the First Time
Most expensive V2203 mistakes start the same way: parts ordered from the machine model instead of the engine serial number. Three engine families, several emissions versions and machines built with more than one engine make that an easy mistake and a costly one to undo.
