How the 7.3 HEUI injector works
The 7.3L Power Stroke uses HEUI injectors — Hydraulically actuated, Electronically controlled Unit Injectors. The high-pressure oil pump (HPOP) makes 500–3,000 PSI of oil pressure, the IPR valve regulates it, and that oil pressure is what drives the injector plunger to fire diesel into the cylinder. It is an elegant system, but it means three things all have to be right for a clean start: healthy injectors, a strong HPOP, and no oil leaks in between. Keep that in mind as you read the symptoms — it is why “bad injectors” and “bad HPOP” feel so similar.
Symptoms of failing 7.3 injectors
- Hard starting, hot or cold, or a long crank before it catches.
- Rough idle, miss, or stumble — often worse cold, sometimes clearing as it warms.
- Buck and surge under light, steady throttle.
- Low power and poor throttle response.
- White smoke (unburned fuel from a weak or dead injector) or blue smoke (injector o-rings letting oil past).
- Injector-related trouble codes and a cylinder that fails a buzz test or cylinder-contribution test.

Injectors, or the HPOP? How to tell
Before you buy eight injectors, rule out the high-pressure oil side. Point toward the HPOP or IPR when: the truck cranks a long time before firing (especially hot), it starts hard but runs fine once lit, or scan data shows it cannot build or hold ICP (injection control pressure) on cranking. Point toward injectors when: the buzz test or cylinder-contribution test isolates a specific cylinder or two, the miss is steady, or you see injector-specific codes. If a truck won’t build oil pressure to start at all, the pump — not the injectors — is usually the fix.
